We are proud to share that the Associated British Ports (ABP) and Knights Brown teams, in collaboration with project partners Ramboll and Boskalis, have jointly won the prestigious Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South East England Engineering Excellence Award in the Best Project Asset Maintenance category.
The award recognises the successful delivery of the ABP Solent Gateway Marine Infrastructure Project at Marchwood Port, which involved a comprehensive upgrade of the Falklands Jetty (Berth 3). Originally constructed in the 1980s, the jetty had become underutilised due to its limited marine capacity.
The project scope included:
- Installation of new berthing and mooring dolphins
- Dredging to deepen the berth
- Deepening and strengthening of existing fender piles
- Installation of upgraded bollards and capstans
- Corrosion protection to extend the jetty’s lifespan by at least 30 years
To protect the local marine ecosystem, all marine works were carefully scheduled within the winter window (December to March), avoiding the salmon migratory period.
Despite the challenges of working predominantly over water, the team developed innovative construction techniques to maximise landside prefabrication and reduce risk. These methods ensured the project was delivered safely, efficiently and with minimal disruption to ongoing port operations.
The result is a future-proofed, modernised jetty that will continue to support both Ministry of Defence (MOD) and commercial maritime operations for decades to come.
We are honoured to have been recognised by the ICE and extend our thanks to all project partners for their collaboration and commitment to engineering excellence.
