Ports Creek Christmas Clean

Volunteers from construction company Knights Brown, Portsmouth City Council and Coastal Partners took part in a ‘Creek Christmas Clean’ on Monday 16 December, picking up a huge amount of litter along Portsea Creek.

The team, including a special guest appearance from Santa Claus, collected waste such as plastics, cigarette buts, a pair of shorts, fishing nets and even an old ‘Only Fools and Horses’ DVD.

The afternoon was organised as part of the current works on the final phase of the North Portsea Coastal Scheme, which started in September 2024.

The improvements along Ports Creek includes 1.3 kms of flood defences. The design consists of a sloped embankment, which provides the required flood defence level, with a rock armour toe.

The North Portsea Coastal Scheme will protect the Hilsea Lines by providing a future proof flood defence system, ensuring that this nationally important historical asset will be available for visitors to enjoy for the decades ahead.

Knights Brown Marketing Manager Catherine Bennett comments:

“We had an incredible time making a difference by removing litter and helping protect this beautiful green space. This is a popular spot with both walkers and dog walkers, so it’s important that we keep it clean and safe for all to enjoy.

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who volunteered.”

Portsmouth City Council Senior Communications and Engagement Officer Rena Wiethaupt comments:

“The fifth and final phase of the North Portsea Coastal Scheme here at Ports Creek in Hilsea is a unique one. Unlike previous phases, where flood walls were the main defence due to environmental or geographical limitations, this phase is surrounded by woodlands, a moat, and a creek, making it a little green sanctuary. Our goal is to preserve and enhance the natural beauty of this area with our work. It was a pleasure to leave the surroundings of our construction site a little bit nicer and cleaner before the Christmas break.”
