Challenge
Part of the road verge was designated as a Conservation Roadside Verge (CRV) for its botanical interest and was protected under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981. The verge was identified as having over 16 species of wildflower, including orchids, and is classed as a lowland meadow with rich invertebrate diversity. It was highly important that our works did not damage the sensitive habitat.
Solution
As part of the works we had to install deep drainage in this area. To ensure the verge was properly conserved, we consulted with an ecologist to develop an appropriate method of working. Topsoil was stripped and conserved near to the site, watered daily to preserve the plants and then reinstated once works in the area were complete.
we took measures to ensure all other excavated material was kept away from the stored turf to prevent contamination or damage. The site team received toolbox talks on the conservation works. We also employed a specialist to harvest seeds from the verge in case replanting was required following restoration.
Outcome
The sensitive CRV area was successfully restored and protected once the works were complete.
Our remit included a prolific community liaison effort complete with meet the contractor event and extensive information signage.
