LOCATION:
A £3.5m contract to install two box section culverts forming a tunnel. A conveyor belt is then to be installed to transport aggregate from the fields of Manor Farm to Brett Aggregate’s quarry.
Six precast concrete units were installed below a public footpath and eight below Ashford Road. Each weighs 20T. These units join to form a tunnel to house the conveyor.
Phase one:
- Open cut excavations.
- Installation of five precast concrete sections using 50t excavator and culvert puller.
- Installation of wing walls and head walls.
- Backfill and installation of handrails.
Phase two:
- Traffic management taking Ashford Road to a single lane.
- Installation of piling and crane mats.
- Installation of dewatering system, sheet piled cofferdam and frame.
- Support underground services and excavation.
- Installation of precast concrete sections using 300t crane and culvert pullers.
- Cast in situ base, wing walls and head walls.
- Backfill, remove piles, install temporary road.
- Whole process repeated to other side of Ashford Road.
Challenge
Overcoming high groundwater conditions and multiple buried services.
Solution
We introduced a dewatering system to enable works to continue through periods of exceptionally wet weather.
We assisted our customer to produce a temporary works design to ensure buried services were appropriately protected throughout and carried out additional enabling works.
Outcome
The project was successfully completed in August 2024.
Winner of a divisional Right Works Award in 2023.
