Necton Air Insulated 400 kV Substation

LOCATION:

Norfolk
Currently under construction, this project is to upgrade a 400kV substation to allow three 1,320MW offshore wind farms to be connected to National Grid's distribution network.

The total area of the western and eastern substation extensions is 22,000m2 while the laydown areas exceed 35,000m2.

The works require the movement of approximately 300,000m2 of material and comprise:

  • All civil and structural works for both temporary and permanent works and laydown areas, including earthworks, drainage, roads, paths, cable troughs, ducts, foundations, and building foundations.
  • An attenuation pond.
  • Temporary drainage ditches.
  • Permanent and temporary topsoil bunds.
  • Extension/modification of the site’s main earth grid.

Challenge

Recruitment of a workforce to support delivery.

Solution

To supplement our specialist energy team, we have recruited a local workforce and approached Norwich College to support our recruitment drive with the provision of training opportunities.

Outcome

The project, which is being undertaken for Burns & McDonnell on behalf of National Grid, will come into use in August 2025.
