LOCATION:
The Sardis Road Public Realm project in Pontypridd town centre aimed to enhance public transport infrastructure and revitalise a key urban space. The scheme included the construction of a new bus layby and the transformation of the former bingo hall site into a vibrant public realm area. The project supports improved pedestrian access, sustainable transport, and community engagement.

Key elements of the project included:
- Construction of a new two-stop bus layby on Sardis Road southbound, including shelters and footway integration.
- Widening of Sardis Road near the High Street junction by modifying the central pedestrian refuge island.
- Associated works including kerbing, resurfacing, road markings, and pedestrian guardrail adjustments.
- Lowering of a Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water main and testing of Western Power Distribution cables.
- Development of a new public realm space with:
- Pedestrian footways, conventional steps, and large ‘picnic steps’.
- In-situ reinforced concrete steps and ramps.
- Bespoke street furniture including handrails, anti-skate devices, lighting, bollards, seating, and planters..
- A concrete base slab and utility connections to future-proof a new kiosk.
- Cycle stands and landscaping to guide pedestrian flow.
- A boundary feature to visually tie the site into the adjacent Tesco building.

Challenges
- Utility coordination: The need to lower a live water main and verify the status of electrical cables required careful planning and coordination.
- Urban constraints: Working in a busy town centre environment with limited space and high pedestrian traffic.
- Design integration: Ensuring the new public realm harmonised with existing infrastructure and future development plans.
Solution
The project team implemented a phased construction approach to minimise disruption and maintain access. Close collaboration with utility providers ensured safe and efficient delivery of underground works. The design incorporated durable materials and bespoke features to enhance the visual appeal and functionality of the space, while future-proofing for additional amenities such as a kiosk.
Outcome
The Sardis Road Public Realm project has delivered a modern, accessible, and attractive urban space that improves public transport access and enhances the pedestrian experience in Pontypridd.
The scheme also fostered community engagement through a STEM initiative with Ysgol Evan James, where students explored local transport heritage and created infographic boards now displayed at the school and the Eisteddfod. The project celebrates both the town’s future and its rich cultural past.
