Barry Waste Transfer Station

LOCATION:

West Glamorgan
A £5.2m project built over two phases for a waste transfer station in Barry.

Overall winner of our own Right Works Award for the site team’s exceptional attention to detail and outstanding quality of delivery.

Phase one

  • Installation of site drainage over 1.42 hectares.
  • Reinforced concrete slab to enable vehicle access.
  • Design and construction of two storage buildings, site offices and welfare facilities.
  • Lighting, weighbridge and vehicle wash facilities.

Phase two (negotiated)

  • Secondary storage unit (850m2) with floor slab.
  • Small store (80m2).
  • Welfare facility (14 bay modular set up).
  • Vehicle wash area.
  • All associated M&E works.
  • Vehicle charging point.
  • External concrete area (2,000m2).

Challenges

A significant earthworks requirement to level the site, topped with a concrete slab across the entire area.

Detailed drainage works comprising four attenuation tanks and seven other tanks (for bypass, silt and rainwater harvesting).

Notable M&E works for site power and CCTV.

Solution

The key to this project’s success was the high level of communication and the trusting relationship established with the Vale of Glamorgan.

Regular internal and external meetings were maintained to ensure the multiple changes instructed during the course of the works were very carefully controlled. This ensured everyone knew what the implications of change would be, avoiding any unpleasant surprises and potential disagreements.

Outcome

This project was delivered with a high degree of initiative and innovation.

Site won materials were crushed and screened on site, reducing reliance on deliveries of supplementary stone and associated environmental impacts.

Construction depths were reduced, allowing for quicker construction.

Retaining walls were reduced in length and the material choice changed from concrete to recycled plastic crib walling.

Earthworks and drainage installation was managed with 3D machine control.

A productive fruit & veg welfare garden was built from waste materials, enhancing the outside seating area.

The electronic site register was adapted allowing workers and visitors to score their well-being on arrival, allowing managers to respond to anyone needing support.
